Radiate
Nicole Kristal’s debut EP features seven songs – a
small sample of the young songwriter’s catalog – that manage to convey a
staggering range of emotion and ability. With a sound that refuses to be
pinned to any single genre or influence, Nicole brings rock-n-roll
immediacy and pop snappiness to the singer-songwriter tradition. A sense
of unapologetic emotion pervades the album, from the sarcastic “Forgive
Me” to the jazzy “Missing the Point.” With “Sultan,” Nicole blends eerie
melodies, innovative bass harmonies, and riffs that remind you that guitar
solos aren’t just for boys. The more upbeat “Once or Twice” and the
seductive “There She Goes” capture her controlled, yet playful energy and
impressive capacity as a skilled rhythm guitarist.
Her title track “Radiate,” denotes the subtle aftermath of
failed romances while revealing the singer/songwriter’s strong, soulful
alto. The background harmonies create a delicate effect, while Aniela
Perry’s lamenting cello compliments Nicole’s potent steel string.
“When we recorded ‘Radiate’ it was just that time of night
when you voice starts to get a little deeper,” said Nicole. “Because we
recorded it so late, it gave the song a little extra moodiness and really
gave the track – along with the cello – a melancholy feel.”
Song after song, Nicole proves her ability at layering
lyrics with one sentiment atop melodies that convey another, creating a
complex, yet catchy, combination. Nicole models her co-producer hat via
the album’s clean, varied instrumentation. The result is a collection of
songs that feel both nuanced and tailor-made to any mood.
